My name is Emily Polacek and I am currently serving as the Vice President of the Hinsdale South Music Boosters. This is my first year serving in an official role on the Hinsdale South Music Boosters.
As some of you may know, I also teach at Hinsdale South. I started my 22nd year teaching AP Psychology and U.S. History today. My son Jack is a sophomore and he plays trumpet in Wind Symphony and the Jazz Band.
I wanted to tell you about my experience as a new board member. What I have learned is that the Music Boosters are an amazing group of parents that want to help in whatever they can. They volunteer their time, their crockpots, their extra napkins from home so that our music students feel loved.
I have helped build a new website for the boosters, hoping it will help bring in money for our student musicians. Have I ever build a website before? Absolutely not, however Covid and teaching online has given me the skill of, I will fool around with this for an hour and I am sure I can figure it out. If not, I can Google it! And sure enough, that's how www.hinsdalesouthmusicboosters.org was born. Danielle Jamil was the brains and brawn behind showing me the program and fixing my mistakes. She was essential in this project and I can't thank her enough. Thank you Danielle for volunteering your time and talent.
Besides preparing and serving food, I also helped with uniform fittings for the first time. This is me, helping fit Josh Byrd one of our Drum Majors. I learned about the mysterious numbers that correspond to different sizes! There is a learning curve to uniform fittings, but I caught on quick and the kids were kind, patient and thankful.
Each student had to be fitted for a hat (in those boxes), a jacket, pants and shoes. The entire process per student took between 15 minutes to 25 minutes.
Kevin Votava our Co-President was amazing at keeping spirits up and finding sizes! Kari Uddin our other President was amazing at keeping everything organized and moving smoothly.
Please consider donating your time, money or pre-packaged food to the Hinsdale South Music Boosters so that we can support our music program.
